I have always loved the 917. This thread will be dedicated to that car, and even some of the replicas that are accurate.

A close look at the flat 12

    Excellent choice for a thread!

If I ever sold one of my cars and did not replace with another Lambo, an RCR 917 would be at the very top of the my list. The pricing, imo, is very reasonable. I would only go that route if I were to make it street legal, regardless of the hell I'd have to go through.

The engine choice is the question. A Porsche flat 6.....if you don't want to get beat up by the Porsche community. But I've seen BMW v-12 in one. I think I've seen a Ferrari 12 in one. What else, hmmmmmm

And, get this, a broke guy, here in Connecticut, is struggling to build a 917 10 from scratch and has two Subaru boxer 6 motors mated together. Looks a mess but, god, I hope he makes it to the end. I'll post a video if I can find it.

Thanks Peter. I'd love to build one with a 930 engine or a wild 911. 2 Subaru engines are crazy! The BMW v12 would be a better choice imo.

This video is a real one, skip to about 1.25

    A decent summary from Wikipedia...

The Porsche 917 is a racecar that gave Porsche its first overall wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1970 and 1971. Powered by the Type 912 flat-12 engine of 4.5, 4.9, or 5 litres, the long-tailed version was capable of a 0-62 mph (100 km/h) time of less than 2.5 seconds and a top speed of over 248 mph (394 km/h0.

In the 1973 Can-Am series, the turbocharged version Porsche 917/30 developed over 1,100 bhp (820 kW), and as much as 1,580 bhp (1,180 kW) in qualifying tune.

The 917 is one of the most iconic sports racing cars of all time, largely for its high speeds and high horsepower outputs, and was made into a movie star by Steve McQueen in his film Le Mans.

I saw one of these engines on display, and someone asked me "how did they come up with this thing?"

I told them it started with a theory and slowly engineers and scientists added more and more pieces to the puzzle... nearly 100 years later this thing was born!

I have not found the exact 917 production numbers, but it is really low, somewhere around 52.

Yeah, saw that when they posted it. Looks like Rt9 in northern NJ.
If that doesn't get you to think about making a plan to get one, I don't knw what does.

Yeah, I saw that the other day! Just popped up on my feed. Family kept walking in while I tried to watch, had to tell them to stop interrupting me :)
Great video. Makes me want one even more. I think it's something I'll do in the next few years. I'd like to assemble half or most of it.
Just think I'd like to try a different motor though. But certainly not an american motor.
    GOD I love that car!

I think a 930 engine is what I would be after. Air cooled, sounds great & fast.
