Well, besides the previous mechanic's work. Was this engine submerged?

Most of that can happen just by not being sealed up and being in a humid environment.

Like Neil Young said "rust never sleeps".

The head however suggests something was going on before it was removed from the car. That erosion is right where the fire ring resides. I think we know why it was taken out of service. Might have had a crankcase and cylinders full of water. Cant wait for the pictures of those.

The carnage thus far is so bad that I cannot wait to see what else you dig up.

A simple head gasket failure causes damage but not that much, we had one case here in switzerland, meanwhile this engine is running perfect again.
Lamborghini Countach QV unhappy garage queen

One of the most crititcal things People tend to Forget, replace the coolant latest after 5 years.

    More pic of heads.
If you will look close at first pic, the 2 valves on the right side, look very close, and you will see there is NO material left around the valve seat to the right side of the seat. The seat was ready to fall out of the head.
Keep that pic in mind then go to the last pic, same head same valve pocket, just with many hours of work to save the head.

More pic. 1st is of the water neck in the block, to the right is water pump neck.
Bottom left shows rear mount before and next to it shows after.
Last pic shows water pump done.

You see the rust in the block water neck and the water pump, wait till I show you pics of the block. Like they say, YOU AIN'T SEEN NOTHING YET.
